China NHC issued notifications regarding the acceptance of “three new foods”. The applications for 9 new food materials, 6 new food additives and 9 new food related material have been received.
Recently, China's National Health Commission (NHC) issued notifications regarding the approval and review of “Thee new foods” (new food raw materials, new food additives, and new food-related products). The notifications included: Ten notifications of approval of review findings; Four notifications of extension notice; and Five notifications of review opinions.
On May 14, 2025, China National Center for Food Safety Risk Assessment (CFSA) issued 10 new food additives for public comments, including 1 new enzyme, 1 new food nutrition enhancers, 3 food additive with expanded scope, 2 food nutrition enhancer with expanded scope and 3 food additives with additional requirements for quality specifications. Comments are welcome before October 26.
China NHC issued notifications regarding the acceptance of “three new foods”. The applications for 7 new food additives and 1 new food related materials have been received.
As defined in the Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008, food additive shall mean any substance not normally consumed as a food in itself and not normally used as a characteristic ingredient of food, whether or not it has nutritive value, the intentional addition of which to food for a technological purpose in the manufacture, processing, preparation, treatment, packaging, transport or storage of such food results, or may be reasonably expected to result, in it or its by-products becoming directly or indirectly a component of such foods.

In day-to-day life, you’ve likely heard marketing slogans like: “Our product has a clean ingredient list – no added sucrose or preservatives, making it safe for both the elderly and children.” Businesses often use these claims to create a perfect image of their products. When consumers see labels such as “不添加蔗糖 (no sucrose added)” or “不添加食品添加剂 (no food additives)”, they subconsciously assume the product is of high quality. However, sucrose is not the only type of sugar, and food additives are not necessarily harmful.

On March 21, 2025, China National Center for Food Safety Risk Assessment (CFSA) issued 8 new food additives for public comments, including 2 new food additives, 2 new food nutrition enhancers, 1 food additive with expanded scope, 1 food processing aid with expanded scope and 1 food additive with supplemented quality specifications. Comments are welcomed before April 20, 2025.
