Ceramides

Ceramides, also known as sphingolipids, are a class of phospholipids with ceramide as the backbone. Phospholipids are major components of cell membranes, and ceramides account for 40%–50% of the lipids in the stratum corneum of the epidermis. Among the intercellular lipids in the stratum corneum, ceramides are the most abundant and functionally important components, with a strong ability to bind water molecules.

Ceramides are naturally present in the skin. As a typical natural lipid, ceramides have a molecular structure and polarity highly similar to the proteins in the stratum corneum and hair fibers, making them easily absorbed by the skin and hair. They can also enhance the penetration of other active ingredients. Ceramides are commonly formulated in conditioning cosmetics together with linoleic acid, hyaluronic acid, and various vitamins. They are suitable for skin with impaired barrier function, such as rough, dry, and flaky skin. The key benefits of ceramides for the skin include reducing transepidermal water loss (TEWL), repairing the skin barrier, providing antioxidant protection, and offering anti-aging effects.
